CHANGES
By Chris Robinson
Ohio will not get itself settled down! Another month has swung past with more new things happening all the time.,
Up north in Cleveland the newest disco, J.J.'s has opened "on the strip." The Grand opening was quite a party with people from all over Cleveland and northern Ohio attending. It started the bar off with a positive atmosphere of friends getting together and they have maintained that feeling since then. It was nice to see many of the local bar owners in attendance, whishing the new owners, John, Bill, John and Joe, well in their new venture.
There are four distinct areas to the bar. A sunken bar for those who like to be able to drink and look around. There is the dance floor for those so inclined. (And with Doug working the Disco Station, there are many who are "So inclined.") There is the "meat rack" wall for those who like to stand and look over the situation. Finally, there is the lounge area with tables and complete with fireplace where you can sit, relax, and talk with friends.
For those that knew the old Silver Spur, the comment of the evening was, "They did a helluva job!"
DISCO 'TIL DAWN Cleveland is also catching up with other parts of the state and not going silent after 2:30. Although Gypsy's has been providing food for hungry night wanderers, there has been no place for the truely addicted "boogie friek" who cannot get his/her disco cravings satisfied by bar closing. Boogie fever sufferers rejoice! Baskerville's Music and Company has come to your rescue with their "Disco Until Dawn" every Friday and Saturday night. When the magic hour of 2:30 comes, the booze disappears, but the disco sounds from Joey Maistros don't. For those of you who need the reassurance of a glass in your hand there are still soft drinks, juices, and coffee available along with food to eat. Columbus Carpenters Create
Down in Columbus the creative carpenters have been hard at work in two locations, Village Grotto and Kismet.
At the Village Grotto, Doug has finished the tap room at the back of the bar. The fine oak paneling adds a rich touch,
Also, now that the warm nights of summer are with us, the patio has been opened and Butch has some plans in the works for it too.
The Grotto now offers many moods for many people. There is the front bar with its disco sound system and lighted dance floor (where the floor itself lights up), the tap room, the upstairs "Loft" for the leather crowd, and the back patio. Depending on how your mood changes you can circulate from one area to another.
While you're in Columbus don't forget to check out the new look at the Kismet. Since January the Kismet has undergone several changes, not the least of which is the addition of a complete disco system. On Sundays the sounds change with the inclusion of hits from the 50's and 60'S. You musicologists with an ear for these nostalgic sounds can test your skill with the hourly quizes JD John Conti provides.
Not only the sounds, but the sights in the Kismet have changed. Since January there has been the addition of a mirrored wall and wallpaper. for the dance floor there is a pair of .rotating mirrored balls and strobe lights to add excitement.
LIMA'S DAVID'S
The "carpentry bug' has not been isolated in central Ohio but has headed west and infected Mr. David's in Lima. At Mr. David's they have added carpeting to their back room and in the near future, according to manager Bob Cooper, they will be developing a Greco-Roman atmosphere with "a modern twist."
While these changes have been going on and between weekend performances by the rock band Livertine, Mr. David's has presented one show and planned another, "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly." These shows feature local talent with the money from the cover charge ($1) on both shows going to various charities.
INTO THE FUTURE... Looking ahead to next month, Gentlemen's Pub is getting very close to opening in Akron. Down Canton way, a new bar called The Third Angle located in the former Ohio theater is being readied for opening around August 1. they promise disco dancing with full food service. More next month...
